We show that for many strata of Abelian differentials in low genus the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmüller geodesic flow is the same for all Teichmüller curves in that stratum, hence equal to the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the whole stratum. This behavior is due to the disjointness property of Teichmüller curves with various geometrically defined divisors on moduli spaces of curves

One of the fundamental questions in CR geometry is: Given two strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds X1 and X2 of dimension 2n􀀀 1, is there a non-constant CR morphism between them? In this paper, we use Kohn{Rossi cohomology to show the non-existence of non-constant CR morphism between such two CR manifolds. Specically, if dimHp;q KR(X1) < dimHp;q KR(X2) for any (p; q) with 1  q  n 􀀀 2, then there is no non-constant CR morphism from X1 to X2.

We analyze the transport properties of a set of symmetry-breaking extensions of the ChirikovTaylor Map. The spatial and temporal asymmetries result in the loss of periodicity in momentum direction in the phase space dynamics, enabling the asymmetric diffusion which is the origin of the unidirectional motion. The simplicity of the model makes the calculation of the global dynamical properties of the system feasible both in phase space and in controlling-parameter space. We present the results of numerical experiments which show the intricate dependence of the asymmetric diffusion to the controlling parameters.

Let W a be an affine Weyl group and : W a W 0 be the natural projection to the corresponding finite Weyl group. We say that w W a has finite Coxeter part if (w) is conjugate to a Coxeter element of W 0. The elements with finite Coxeter part are a union of conjugacy classes of W a. We show that for each conjugacy class O of W a with finite Coxeter part there exists a unique maximal proper parabolic subgroup W J of W a, such that the set of minimal length elements in O is exactly the set of Coxeter elements in W J. Similar results hold for twisted conjugacy classes.

This paper studies the sparsistency and rates of convergence for estimating sparse covariance and precision matrices based on penalized likelihood with nonconvex penalty functions. Here, sparsistency refers to the property that all parameters that are zero are actually estimated as zero with probability tending to one. Depending on the case of applications, sparsity priori may occur on the covariance matrix, its inverse or its Cholesky decomposition. We study these three sparsity exploration problems under a unified framework with a general penalty function. We show that the rates of convergence for these problems under the Frobenius norm are of order (s n log p n/n) 1/2, where s n is the number of nonzero elements, p n is the size of the covariance matrix and n is the sample size. Variable selection in high-dimensional space characterizes many contemporary problems in scientific discovery and decision making. Many frequently-used techniques are based on independence screening; examples include correlation ranking (Fan and Lv, 2008) or feature selection using a two-sample t-test in high-dimensional classification (Tibshirani et al., 2003). Within the context of the linear model, Fan and Lv (2008) showed that this simple correlation ranking possesses a sure independence screening property under certain conditions and that its revision, called iteratively sure independent screening (ISIS), is needed when the features are marginally unrelated but jointly related to the response variable. In this paper, we extend ISIS, without explicit definition of residuals, to a general pseudo-likelihood framework, which includes generalized linear models as a special case. Even in the least-squares setting, the new method improves ISIS by allowing variable deletion in the iterative process. Our technique allows us to select important features in high-dimensional classification where the popularly used two-sample t-method fails. A new technique is introduced to reduce the false discovery rate in the feature screening stage. Several simulated and two real data examples are presented to illustrate the methodology.

We propose definitions of quasilocal energy and momentum surface energy of a spacelike 2-surface with positive intrinsic curvature in a spacetime. Our definitions do not depend on the compact spacelike hypersurface it bounds. We show that the quasilocal energy of the boundary of a compact spacelike hypersurface which satisfies the local energy condition is strictly positive unless the spacetime is flat along the spacelike hypersurface.
