We consider the Schrodinger equation with a logarithmic nonlinearity and a repulsive harmonic potential. Depending on the parameters of the equation, the solution may or may not be dispersive. When dispersion occurs, it does with an exponential rate in time. To control this, we change the unknown function through a generalized lens transform. This approach neutralizes the possible boundary effects, and could be used in the case of the Schrodinger equation without potential. We then employ standard splitting methods on the new equation via a nonuniform grid, after the logarithmic nonlinearity has been regularized. We also discuss the case of a power nonlinearity and give some results concerning the error estimates of the first-order Lie-Trotter splitting method for both cases of nonlinearities. Finally extensive numerical experiments are reported to investigate the dynamics of the equations.

In this article, we propose a numerical method based on sparse Gaussian processes (SGPs) to solve nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). The SGP algorithm is based on a Gaussian process (GP) method, which approximates the solution of a PDE with the maximum a posteriori probability estimator of a GP conditioned on the PDE evaluated at a finite number of sample points. The main bottleneck of the GP method lies in the inversion of a covariance matrix, whose cost grows cubically with respect to the size of samples. To improve the scalability of the GP method while retaining desirable accuracy, we draw inspiration from SGP approximations, where inducing points are introduced to summarize the information of samples. More precisely, our SGP method uses a Gaussian prior associated with a low-rank kernel generated by inducing points randomly selected from samples. In the SGP method, the size of the matrix to be inverted is proportional to the number of inducing points, which is much less than the size of the samples. The numerical experiments show that the SGP method using less than half of the uniform samples as inducing points achieves comparable accuracy to the GP method using the same number of uniform samples, which significantly reduces the computational cost. We give the existence proof for the approximation to the solution of a PDE and provide rigorous error analysis.

Numerical homogenization and multiscale finite element methods construct effective properties on a coarse grid by solving local problems and extracting the average effective properties from these local solutions. In some cases, the solutions of local problems can be expensive to compute due to scale disparity. In this setting, one can basically apply a homogenization or multiscale method reiteratively to solve for the local problems. This process is known as reiterated homogenization and has many variations in the numerical context. Though the process seems to be a straightforward extension of two-level process, it requires some careful implementation and the concept development for problems without scale separation and high contrast. In this paper, we develop bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the coupled system of compressible miscible displacement problems. We consider the problem with two components and the (volumetric) concentration of the $i$th component of the fluid mixture, $c_i$, should be between $0$ and $1$. However, $c_i$ does not satisfy the maximum principle. Therefore, the numerical techniques introduced in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied directly. The main idea is to apply the positivity-preserving techniques to both $c_1$ and $c_2$, respectively and enforce $c_1+c_2=1$ simultaneously to obtain physically relevant approximations. By doing so, we have to treat the time derivative of the pressure $dp/dt$ as a source in the concentration equation. Moreover, $c_i's$ are not the conservative variables, as a result, the classical bound-preserving limiter in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied. Therefore, another limiter will be introduced. Numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the accuracy in $L^\infty$-norm and good performance of the numerical technique.

We develop Random Batch Methods for interacting particle systems with large number of particles. These methods use small but random batches for particle interactions, thus the computational cost is reduced from $O(N^2)$ per time step to $O(N)$, for a system with $N$ particles with binary interactions. On one hand, these methods are efficient Asymptotic-Preserving schemes for the underlying particle systems, allowing $N$-independent time steps and also capture, in the $N \to \infty$ limit, the solution of the mean field limit which are nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations; on the other hand, the stochastic processes generated by the algorithms can also be regarded as new models for the underlying problems. For one of the methods, we give a particle number independent error estimate under some special interactions. Then, we apply these methods to some representative problems in mathematics, physics, social and data sciences, including the Dyson Brownian motion from random matrix theory, Thomson's problem, distribution of wealth, opinion dynamics and clustering. Numerical results show that the methods can capture both the transient solutions and the global equilibrium in these problems.
