In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional parallel solver using the fifth order high-resolution weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference scheme to perform extensive simulation for three-dimensional gaseousdetonations. A careful study is conducted for the propagation modes of three-dimensional gaseous detonation wave-front structures in a long square duct. The numerical results indicate that, the instability of detonation, overdrive factor, transverse dimension and initial perturbation are the main factors that influence the appearance of spinning detonation.

We propose a dynamically bi-orthogonal method (DyBO) to solve time dependent stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). The objective of our method is to exploit some intrinsic sparse structure in the stochastic solution by constructing the sparsest representation of the stochastic solution via a bi-orthogonal basis. It is well-known that the KarhunenLoeve expansion (KLE) minimizes the total mean squared error and gives the sparsest representation of stochastic solutions. However, the computation of the KL expansion could be quite expensive since we need to form a covariance matrix and solve a large-scale eigenvalue problem. The main contribution of this paper is that we derive an equivalent system that governs the evolution of the spatial and stochastic basis in the KL expansion. In this paper, a structure-preserving algorithm is developed for the computation of a semi-stabilizing solution of a Generalized Algebraic Riccati Equation (GARE). The semi-stabilizing solution of GAREs has been used to characterize the solvability of the (J, J ′ )-spectral factorization problem in control theory for general rational matrices which may have poles and zeros on the extended imaginary axis. The main difficulty in solving such a GARE lies in the fact that its associated Hamiltonian/skew-Hamiltonian pencil has eigenvalues on the extended imaginary axis. Consequently, it is not clear which eigenspace of the associated Hamiltonian/skew-Hamiltonian pencil can characterize the desired semi-stabilizing solution. That is, it is not clear which eigenvectors and principal vectors corresponding to the eigenvalues on the extended imaginary axis should be contained in the eigenspace that we wish to compute. Hence, the well-known generalized eigenspace approach for the classical algebraic Riccati equations cannot be employed directly. The proposed algorithm consists of a structure-preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) and a postprocessing procedure to determine the desired eigenvectors and principal vectors corresponding to the purely imaginary and infinite eigenvalues. Under mild assumptions, linear convergence of rate 1/2 for the SDA is proved. Numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed algorithm performs efficiently and reliably.

Previous work has shown that in a two-dimensional periodic medium under focusing or defocusing cubic nonlinearities, gap solitons in the form of low-amplitude and slowly modulated single-Bloch-wave packets can bifurcate out from the edges of Bloch bands. In this paper, linear stability properties of these gap solitons near band edges are determined both analytically and numerically. Through asymptotic analysis, it is shown that these gap solitons are linearly unstable if the slope of their power curve at the band edge has the opposite sign of nonlinearity
here focusing nonlinearity is said to have a positive sign, and defocusing nonlinearity to have a negative sign. An equivalent condition for linear instability is that the power of the gap solitons near the band edge is lower than the limit power value on the band edge. Through numerical computations of the power curves, it is found that this condition is always satisfied, thus two-dimensional gap solitons near band edges are linearly unstable. The analytical formula for the unstable eigenvalue of gap solitons near band edges is also asymptotically derived. It is shown that this unstable eigenvalue is proportional to the cubic power of the soliton’s amplitude, and it induces width instabilities of gap solitons. A comparison between this analytical eigenvalue formula and numerically computed eigenvalues shows excellent agreement.
