We provide a new insight of the difficulty of nonparametric estimation of a whole function. A new method is invented for finding a minimax lower bound of globally estimating a function. The idea is to adjust automatically the direction to the nearly hardest I-dimensional subproblem at each location, and to use locally the difficulty of I-dimensional subproblem. In a variety of contexts, our method can give not only attainable global rates, but also constant factors. Comparing with the existing techniques, our method has the advantages of being easily implemented and understood, and can give constant factors as well.

When people in a society want to make inference about some parameter, each person would potentially want to use data collected by other people. Information (data) exchange in social contexts is usually costly, so to make sound statistical decisions, people need to compromise between benefits and costs of information acquisition. Conflicts of interests and coordination will arise. Classical statistics does not consider peoples interaction in the data collection process. To address this ignorance, this work explores multi-agent Bayesian inference problems with a game theoretic social network model. Bearing our interest in aggregate inference at the societal level, we propose a new concept finite population learning to address whether with high probability, a large fraction of people can make good inferences. Serving as a foundation, this concept enables us to study the long run trend of aggregate inference quality as population grows.

Large-scale multiple testing with correlated and heavy-tailed data arises in a wide range of research areas from genomics, medical imaging to finance. Conventional methods for estimating the false discovery proportion (FDP) often ignore the effect of heavy-tailedness and the dependence structure among test statistics, and thus may lead to inefficient or even inconsistent estimation. Also, the commonly imposed joint normality assumption is arguably too stringent for many applications. To address these challenges, in this article we propose a factor-adjusted robust multiple testing (FarmTest) procedure for large-scale simultaneous inference with control of the FDP. We demonstrate that robust factor adjustments are extremely important in both controlling the FDP and improving the power. High throughput genetic sequencing arrays with thousands of measurements per sample and a great amount of related censored clinical data have increased demanding need for better measurement specific model selection. In this paper we establish strong oracle properties of non-concave penalized methods for non-polynomial (NP) dimensional data with censoring in the framework of Coxs proportional hazards model. A class of folded-concave penalties are employed and both LASSO and SCAD are discussed specifically. We unveil the question under which dimensionality and correlation restrictions can an oracle estimator be constructed and grasped. It is demonstrated that non-concave penalties lead to significant reduction of the irrepresentable condition needed for LASSO model selection consistency.
