We investigate, by numerical simulation, the shear layer instability associated with the outer layer of a spiral vortex formed behind an impulsively started thin ellipse. The unstable free shear layer undergoes a secondary instability. We connect this instability with the dynamics of corner vortices adjacent to the tip of the ellipse by observing that the typical turnover time of the corner vortex matches the period of the unstable mode in the shear layer. We suggest that the corner vortex acts as a signal generator, and produces periodic perturbation which triggers the instability.

For the data based choice of the bandwidth of a kernel density estimator, several methods have recently been proposed which have a very fast asymptotic rate of convergence to the optimal bandwidth. In particular the relative rate of convergence is the square root of the sample size, which is known to be the best possible. The point of this paper is to show how semiparametric arguments can be employed to calculate the best possible constant coefficient, that is, an analog of the usual Fisher information, in this convergence. This establishes an important benchmark as to how well bandwidth selection methods can ever hope to perform. It is seen that some existing methods attain the bound, others do not.

A computational method, based on l1-norm minimization, is proposed for the problem traffic flow correction. Without extra information, the problem is generally ill-posed when a large portion of the link sensors are unhealthy. It is possible, however, to correct the corruptions accurately if there are only a few bad sensors which are located at certain links by the proposed method. We mathematically quantify these links that are robust to miscounts and relate them to the geometric structure of the traffic network. In a more realistic setting, besides the unhealthy link sensors, if small measure noise are present at the other sensors, our method guarantees to give an estimated traffic flow fairly close to the ground-truth. Both toy and real-world examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We establish global regularity for weak solutions to quasilinear divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations over Lipschitz domains with controlled growth conditions on low order terms. The leading coefficients belong to the class of BMO functions with small mean oscillations with respect to <i>x</i>.

We consider the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with a defocusing nonlinearity which is mass-(super)critical and energy-subcritical. We prove uniform in time error estimates for the Lie-Trotter time splitting discretization. This uniformity in time is obtained thanks to a vectorfield which provides time decay estimates for the exact and numerical solutions. This vectorfield is classical in scattering theory, and requires several technical modifications compared to previous error estimates for splitting methods.
