For systems of hyperbolic conservation laws, a new Glimm functional was recently constructed when the linearly degenerate manifold in each characteristic field is either the whole space or it consists of a finitely many smooth and transversal manifolds of codimension one. This new functional leads to the neat consistency and convergence rate estimation of the Glimm scheme. In this paper, by the motivation of the result in Ref. 2, we show that the corresponding new Glimm functional can be constructed for general systems only under the strict hyperbolicity assumption.

We give a generalized version of uncertainty principle, and apply it to the study of regularization properties of solutions to kinetic equations. We characterize probability measure with finite moment of any order in terms of the symmetric difference operators of their Fourier transforms. This paper aims to mathematically advance the field of quantitative thermo-acoustic imaging. Given several electromagnetic data sets, we establish for the first time an analytical formula for reconstructing the absorption coefficient from thermal energy measurements. Since the formula involves derivatives of the given data up to the third order, it is unstable in the sense that small measurement noises may cause large errors. However, in the presence of measurement noise, the obtained formula, together with a noise regularization technique, provides a good initial guess for the true absorption coefficient. We finally correct the errors by deriving a reconstruction formula based on the least square solution of an optimal control problem and prove that this optimization step reduces the errors occurring and enhances the resolution.

A reformulation of the planetary geostrophic equations (PGEs) with the inviscid balance equation is proposed and the existence of global weak solutions is established, provided that the mechanical force satisfies an integral constraint. There is only one prognostic equation for the temperature field, and the velocity field is statically determined by the planetary geostrophic balance combined with the incompressibility condition. Furthermore, the velocity profile can be accurately represented as a function of the temperature gradient. In particular, the vertical velocity depends only on the first-order derivative of the temperature. As a result, the bound for the L ∞ (0, t 1 ; L 2 ) ∩ L 2 (0, t 1 ; H 1 ) norm of the temperature field is sufficient to show the existence of the weak solution.

Under the diffusion scaling and a scaling assumption on the microscopic component, a non-classical fluid dynamic system was derived in\cite {BGLY} that is related to the system of ghost effect derived in\cite {Sone-2} in different settings. This paper aims to justify this limit system for a non-trivial background profile with slab symmetry. The result reveals not only the diffusion phenomena in the temperature and density, but also the flow of higher order in Knudsen number due to the gradient of the temperature. Precisely, we show that the solution to the Boltzmann equation converges to a diffusion wave with decay rates in both Knudsen number and time.

Mathematical analysis on electromagnetic waves in photonic graphene, a photonic topological material which has a honeycomb structure, is one of the most important current research topics. By modulating the honeycomb structure, numerous topological phenomena have been observed recently. The electromagnetic waves in such a media are generally described by the 2-dimensional wave equation. It has been shown that the corresponding elliptic operator with a honeycomb material weight has Dirac points in its dispersion surfaces. In this paper, we study the time evolution of the wave packets spectrally concentrated at such Dirac points in a modulated honeycomb material weight. We prove that such wave packet dynamics is governed by the Dirac equation with a varying mass in a large but finite time. Our analysis provides mathematical insights to those topological phenomena in photonic graphene.

We investigate the fractional Schrödinger equation with a periodic PT-symmetric potential. In the inverse space, the problem transfers into a first-order nonlocal frequency-delay partial differential equation. We show that at a critical point, the band structure becomes linear and symmetric in the one-dimensional case, which results in a nondiffracting propagation and conical diffraction of input beams. If only one channel in the periodic potential is excited, adjacent channels become uniformly excited along the propagation direction, which can be used to generate laser beams of high power and narrow width. In the two-dimensional case, there appears conical diffraction that depends on the competition between the fractional Laplacian operator and the PT-symmetric potential. This investigation may find applications in novel on-chip optical devices.

We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the gravitational hydrostatic equilibrium for the general equation of state of pressure-density relation in the framework of vacuum free boundary problem of spherically symmetric compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in three dimensions.The results apply to white dwarfs and polytropes with γ≥2, for which even the linearized asymptotic stability results are not available in literature, to the best of the authors' knowledge. Detailed decay rates of perturbations are given.
