The class of generating functions for completely monotone sequences (moments of finite positive measures on $[0,1]$) has an elegant characterization as the class of Pick functions analytic and positive on $(-\infty,1)$. We establish this and another such characterization and develop a variety of consequences. In particular, we characterize generating functions for moments of convex and concave probability distribution functions on $[0,1]$, and we provide a simple analytic proof that for any real $p,r>0$, the Fuss-Catalan or Raney numbers $\frac{r}{pn+r}\binom{pn+r}{n}$, $n=0,1,\ldots$ are the moments of a probability distribution on some interval $[0,\tau]$ if and only if $p\ge1$ and $p\ge r$.

This paper deals with Lp geominimal surface area and its extension to Lp mixed geominimal surface area. We give an integral formula of Lp geominimal surface area by the p-Petty body and introduce the concept of Lp mixed geominimal surface area which is a natural extension of Lp geominimal surface area. Some inequalities, such as, analogues of Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities, Blaschke–Santaló inequalities, and affine isoperimetric inequalities for Lp mixed geominimal surface areas are obtained.

In this paper, we analyze the Lax-Wendroff discontinuous Galerkin (LWDG) method for solving linear conservation laws. The method was originally proposed by Guo et al., where they applied local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) techniques to approximate high order spatial derivatives in the Lax-Wendroff time discretization. We show that, under the standard CFL condition $\tau\leq \lambda h$ (where $\tau$ and $h$ are the time step and the maximum element length respectively and $\lambda>0$ is a constant) and uniform or non-increasing time steps, the second order schemes with piecewise linear elements and the third order schemes with arbitrary piecewise polynomial elements are stable in the $L^2$ norm. The specific type of stability may differ with different choices of numerical fluxes. Our stability analysis includes multidimensional problems with divergence-free coefficients. Besides solving the equation itself, the LWDG method also gives approximations to its time derivative simultaneously. We obtain optimal error estimates for both the solution $u$ and its first order time derivative $u_t$ in one dimension, and numerical examples are given to validate our analysis.
