The existence of topological solutions for the Chern-Simons equation with two Higgs particles has been proved by Lin, Ponce and Yang [16]. However, both the uniqueness problem and the existence of non-topological solutions have been left open. In this paper, we consider the case of one vortex at origin. Among others, we prove the uniqueness of topological solutions and give a complete study of the radial solutions, in particular, the existence of some non-topological solutions

Let $f(x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n!}q^{n(n-1)/2}x^n$ ($0<q<1$) be the deformed exponential function. It is known that the zeros of $f(x)$ are real and form a negative decreasing sequence $(x_k)$ ($k\ge 1$). We investigate the complete asymptotic expansion for $x_{k}$ and prove that for any $n\ge1$, as $k\to \infty$, \begin{align*} x_k=-kq^{1-k}\Big(1+\sum_{i=1}^{n}C_i(q)k^{-1-i}+o(k^{-1-n})\Big), \end{align*} where $C_i(q)$ are some $q$ series which can be determined recursively. We show that each $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[A_0,A_1,A_2]$, where $A_{i}=\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}m^i\sigma(m)q^m$ and $\sigma(m)$ denotes the sum of positive divisors of $m$. When writing $C_{i}$ as a polynomial in $A_0, A_1$ and $A_2$, we find explicit formulas for the coefficients of the linear terms by using Bernoulli numbers. Moreover, we also prove that $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[E_2,E_4,E_6]$, where $E_2$, $E_4$ and $E_6$ are the classical Eisenstein series of weight 2, 4 and 6, respectively.

The first part of this paper describes some important underlying themes in the mathematical theory of continuum mechanics that are distinct from formulating and analyzing governing equations. The main part of this paper is devoted to a survey of some concrete, conceptually simple, pretty problems that help illuminate the underlying themes. The paper concludes with a discussion of the crucial role of invariant constitutive equations in computation.

We study homogenization of G-equation with a ow straining term (or the strain G-equation) in two dimensional periodic cellular ow. The strain G-equation is a highly non-coercive and non-convex level set Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The main objective is to investigate how the ow induced straining (the nonconvex term) in uences front propagation as the ow intensity A increases. Three distinct regimes are identified. When A is below the critical level, homogenization holds and the turbulent ame speed sT (effective Hamiltonian) is well-defined for any periodic ow with small divergence and is enhanced by the cellular ow as $s_T \ge O(A/logA)$. In the second regime where A is slightly above the critical value, homogenization breaks down, and $s_T$ is not well defined along any direction. Solutions become a mixture of fast moving part and a stagnant part. When $A$ is sufficiently large, the whole ame front ceases to propagate forward due to the flow induced straining. In particular, along directions $p = (1; 0)$ and $(0;1)$, $s_T$ is well-defined again with a value of zero (trapping). A partial homogenization result is also proved. If we consider a similar but relatively simpler Hamiltonian, the trapping occurs along all directions. The analysis is based on the two-player dierential game representation of solutions, selection of game strategies and trapping regions, and construction of connecting trajectories.

The contact discontinuity is one of the basic wave patterns in gas motions. The stability of contact discontinuities with general perturbations for the NavierStokes equations and the Boltzmann equation is a long standing open problem. General perturbations of a contact discontinuity may generate diffusion waves which evolve and interact with the contact wave to cause analytic difficulties. In this paper, we succeed in obtaining the large time asymptotic stability of a contact wave pattern with a convergence rate for the NavierStokes equations and the Boltzmann equation in a uniform way. One of the key observations is that even though the energy norm of the deviation of the solution from the contact wave may grow at the rate (1+ t) 1 4, it can be compensated by the decay in the energy norm of the derivatives of the deviation which is of the order of (1+ t) 1 4. In analogy with the classical Minkowski problem, necessary and sufficient conditions are given to assure that a given measure on the unit sphere is the cone-volume measure of the unit ball of a finite dimensional Banach space.

We introduce two exponential-type integrators for the “good” Boussinesq equation. They are of orders one and two, respectively, and they require lower spatial regularity of the solution compared to classical exponential integrators. For the first integrator, we prove first-order convergence in H^r for solutions in H^{r+1} with r>1/2. This new integrator even converges (with lower order) in H^r for solutions in H^r, i.e., without any additional smoothness assumptions. For the second integrator, we prove second-order convergence in H^r for solutions in H^{r+3} with r>1/2 and convergence in L^2 for solutions in H^3. Numerical results are reported to illustrate the established error estimates. The experiments clearly demonstrate that the new exponential-type integrators are favorable over classical exponential integrators for initial data with low regularity.

For the physical vacuum free boundary problem with the sound speed being C^1/2-Holder continuous near vacuum boundaries of the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with damping, the global existence of the smooth solution is proved, which is shown to converge to the Barenblatt self-similar solution for the porous media equation with the same total mass when the initial datum is a small perturbation of the Barenblatt solution. The pointwise convergence with a rate of density, the convergence rate of velocity in the supremum norm, and the precise expanding rate of the physical vacuum boundaries are also given. The proof is based on a construction of higher-order weighted functionals with both space and time weights capturing the behavior of solutions both near vacuum states and in large time, an introduction of a new ansatz, higher-order nonlinear energy estimates, and elliptic estimates.

In the present paper, we prove the existence of solutions $(\lambda_1,\lambda_2,u,v)\in\R^2\times H^1(\R^3,\R^2)$ to systems of coupled Schr\"odinger equations $$ \begin{cases} -\Delta u+\lambda_1u=\mu_1 u^3+\beta uv^2\quad &\hbox{in}\;\R^3\\ -\Delta v+\lambda_2v=\mu_2 v^3+\beta u^2v\quad&\hbox{in}\;\R^3\\ u,v>0&\hbox{in}\;\R^3 \end{cases} $$ satisfying the normalization constraint $ \displaystyle\int_{\R^3}u^2=a^2\quad\hbox{and}\;\int_{\R^3}v^2=b^2, $ which appear in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates or in nonlinear optics. The parameters $\mu_1,\mu_2,\beta>0$ are prescribed as are the masses $a,b>0$. The system has been considered mostly in the case of fixed frequencies $\lambda_1,\lambda_2$. When the masses are prescribed, the standard approach to this problem is variational with $\lambda_1,\lambda_2$ appearing as Lagrange multipliers. Here we present a new approach based on the fixed point index in cones, bifurcation theory, and the continuation method. We obtain the existence of normalized solutions for any given $a,b>0$ for $\beta$ in a large range. We also have a result about the nonexistence of positive solutions which shows that our existence theorem is almost optimal. Especially, if $\mu_1=\mu_2$ we prove that normalized solutions exist for all $\beta>0$ and all $a,b>0$.

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of the 3D primitive equations for planetary oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal eddy viscosity in the horizontal momentum equations and only horizontal diffusion in the temperature equation. Global well-posedness of strong solution is established for any $H^2$ initial data. An $N$-dimensional logarithmic Sobolev embedding inequality, which bounds the $L^\infty$ norm in terms of the $L^q$ norms up to a logarithm of the $L^p$-norm, for $p>N$, of the first order derivatives, and a system version of the classic Gronwall inequality are exploited to establish the required a priori $H^2$ estimates for the global regularity.

We study the periodic homogenization of first order front propagations. Based on PDE methods, we provide a simple proof that, for n ≥ 3, the class of centrally symmetric polytopes with rational coordinates and nonempty interior is admissible as effective fronts, which was also established by I. Babenko and F. Balacheff [Sur la forme de la boule unit\'e de la norme stable unidimensionnelle, Manuscripta Math. 119 (2006) 347--358] and M. Jotz [Hedlund metrics and the stable norm, Diff. Geometry Appl. 27 (2009) 543--550] in the form of stable norms as an extension of G. A. Hedlund's classical result [Geodesics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with periodic coefficients, Ann. Math. 33 (1932) 719--739]. Besides, we obtain the optimal convergence rate of the homogenization problem for this class.

We construct a conformally invariant random family of closed curves in the plane by welding of random homeomorphisms of the unit circle. The homeomorphism is constructed using the exponential of$βX$, where X is the restriction of the 2-dimensional free field on the circle and the parameter$β$is in the “high temperature” regime $$ \beta < \sqrt {2} $$ . The welding problem is solved by studying a non-uniformly elliptic Beltrami equation with a random complex dilatation. For the existence a method of Lehto is used. This requires sharp probabilistic estimates to control conformal moduli of annuli and they are proven by decomposing the free field as a sum of independent fixed scale fields and controlling the correlations of the complex dilatation restricted to dyadic cells of various scales. For the uniqueness we invoke a result by Jones and Smirnov on conformal removability of Hölder curves. Our curves are closely related to SLE($ϰ$) for$ϰ$<4.

We present a simple proof on the formation of flocking in the F. Cucker and S. Smale system [Jpn. J. Math. (3) 2, No. 1, 197–227 (2007; Zbl 1166.92323)] based on the explicit construction of a Lyapunov functional. Our results also provide a unified condition on the initial states in which the exponential convergence to the flocking state will occur. For large particle systems, we give a rigorous justification for the mean-field limit from the many particle Cucker-Smale system to the Vlasov equation with flocking dissipation as the number of particles goes to infinity.

In this paper, we derive estimates for scalar curvature type equations with more singular right hand side. As an application, we prove Donaldson's conjecture on the equivalence between geodesic stability and existence of cscK when $Aut_0(M,J)\neq0$. Moreover, we show that when $Aut_0(M,J)\neq0$, the properness of $K$-energy with respect to a suitably defined distance implies the existence of cscK.

We provide a refinement of the Poincaré inequality on the torus $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ : there exists a set $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathbb{T} ^{d}$ of directions such that for every $\alpha \in \mathcal{B}$ there is a $c_{\alpha } > 0$ with $$\begin{aligned} \|\nabla f\|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{T}^{d})}^{d-1} \| \langle \nabla f, \alpha \rangle \|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{T}^{d})} \geq c_{\alpha }\|f\| _{L^{2}(\mathbb{T}^{d})}^{d} \quad \mbox{for all}~f\in H^{1}\bigl( \mathbb{T}^{d}\bigr)~ \mbox{with mean 0.} \end{aligned}$$ The derivative $\langle \nabla f, \alpha \rangle $ does not detect any oscillation in directions orthogonal to $\alpha $ , however, for certain $\alpha $ the geodesic flow in direction $\alpha $ is sufficiently mixing to compensate for that defect. On the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ the inequality holds for $\alpha = (1, \sqrt{2})$ but is not true for $\alpha = (1,e)$ . Similar results should hold at a great level of generality on very general domains.

Inspired by works of Castéras (Pac J Math 276:321–345, 2015), Li and Zhu (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 58:1–18, 2019), Sun and Zhu (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 60:1–26, 2021), we propose a heat flow for the mean field equation on a connected finite graph G=(V,E). Namely ∂_tϕ(u)=Δu−Q+ρ\frac{e^u}{∫_V e^u dμ} u(⋅,0)=u_0, where Δ is the standard graph Laplacian, ρ is a real number, Q:V→R is a function satisfying ∫_V Qdμ=ρ, and ϕ:R→R is one of certain smooth functions including ϕ(s)=es. We prove that for any initial data u_0 and any ρ∈R, there exists a unique solution u:V×[0,+∞)→R of the above heat flow; moreover, u(x, t) converges to some function u_∞:V→R uniformly in x∈V as t→+∞, and u_∞ is a solution of the mean field equation Δu_∞−Q+ρ\frac{e^{u_∞}}{∫_V e^{u_∞}dμ}=0. Though G is a finite graph, this result is still unexpected, even in the special case Q≡0. Our approach reads as follows: the short time existence of the heat flow follows from the ODE theory; various integral estimates give its long time existence; moreover we establish a Lojasiewicz–Simon type inequality and use it to conclude the convergence of the heat flow.

We define non-pluripolar products of an arbitrary number of closed positive (1, 1)-currents on a compact Kähler manifold$X$. Given a big (1, 1)-cohomology class$α$on$X$(i.e. a class that can be represented by a strictly positive current) and a positive measure$μ$on$X$of total mass equal to the volume of$α$and putting no mass on pluripolar sets, we show that$μ$can be written in a unique way as the top-degree self-intersection in the non-pluripolar sense of a closed positive current in$α$. We then extend Kolodziedj’s approach to sup-norm estimates to show that the solution has minimal singularities in the sense of Demailly if$μ$has$L$^{1+$ε$}-density with respect to Lebesgue measure. If$μ$is smooth and positive everywhere, we prove that$T$is smooth on the ample locus of$α$provided$α$is nef. Using a fixed point theorem, we finally explain how to construct singular Kähler–Einstein volume forms with minimal singularities on varieties of general type.

In this paper, combining the $p$-capacity for $p\in (1, n)$ with the Orlicz addition of convex domains, we develop the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory. In particular, the Orlicz $L_{\phi}$ mixed $p$-capacity of two convex domains is introduced and its geometric interpretation is obtained by the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Hadamard variational formula. The $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski and Orlicz-Minkowski inequalities are established, and the equivalence of these two inequalities are discussed as well. The $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Minkowski problem is proposed and solved under some mild conditions on the involving functions and measures. In particular, we provide the solutions for the normalized $p$-capacitary $L_q$ Minkowski problems with $q>1$ for both discrete and general measures.

The Boltzmann equation which describes the time evolution of a large number of particles through the binary collision in statistics physics has close relation to the systems of fluid dynamics, that is, Euler equations and NavierStokes equations. As for a basic wave pattern to Euler equations, we consider the nonlinear stability of contact discontinuities to the Boltzmann equation. Even though the stability of the other two nonlinear waves, i.e., shocks and rarefaction waves has been extensively studied, there are few stability results on the contact discontinuity because unlike shock waves and rarefaction waves, its derivative has no definite sign, and decays slower than a rarefaction wave. Moreover, it behaves like a linear wave in a nonlinear setting so that its coupling with other nonlinear waves reveals a complicated interaction mechanism. In this paper we prove some results concerning stability of hypersurfaces in the four dimensional Euclidean space with zero scalar curvature. First we prove there is no complete stable hypersurface with zero scalar curvature, polynomial growth of integral of the mean curvature, and with the Gauss-Kronecker curvature bounded away from zero. We conclude this paper giving a sufficient condition for a regular domain to be stable in terms of the mean and the Gauss-Kronecker curvatures of the hypersurface and the radius of the smallest extrinsic ball which contains the domain.

This note considers the hyper-contractivity and the uniqueness of the weak solutions to the two dimensional Keller–Segel equations. We prove a refined hyper-contractive property and consequently obtain the uniqueness of global weak solutions provided that the initial data satisfy , and . We also extend the result to higher dimensions.
