An$L$^{1}-existence theorem is proved for the nonlinear stationary Boltzmann equation with hard forces and no small velocity truncation—only the Grad angular cut-off-in a setting between two coaxial rotating cylinders when the indata are given on the cylinders.

In this paper, the relation between algebraic shifting and join which was conjectured by Eran Nevo will be proved. Let σ and τ be simplicial complexes and σ*τ be their join. Let$J$_{σ}be the exterior face ideal of σ and Δ(σ) the exterior algebraic shifted complex of σ. Assume that σ*τ is a simplicial complex on [$n$]={1,2,...,$n$}. For any$d$-subset$S$⊂[$n$], let $m_{\preceq_{\textrm{rev}}S}(\sigma)$ denote the number of$d$-subsets$R$∈σ which are equal to or smaller than$S$with respect to the reverse lexicographic order. We will prove that $m_{\preceq_{\textrm{rev}}S}(\Delta(\sigma*\tau))\geq m_{\preceq_{\textup{rev}}S}(\Delta(\Delta(\sigma) *\Delta(\tau)))$ for all$S$⊂[$n$]. To prove this fact, we also prove that $m_{\preceq_{\textrm{rev}}S}(\Delta(\sigma))\geq m_{\preceq_{\textup{rev}}S}(\Delta(\Delta_{\varphi}(\sigma)))$ for all$S$⊂[$n$] and for all nonsingular matrices ϕ, where Δ_{ϕ}(σ) is the simplicial complex defined by $J_{\Delta_{\varphi}(\sigma)}=\textup{in}(\varphi(J_{\sigma}))$ .

We obtain several rigidity results for biharmonic submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with parallel normalized mean curvature vector fields. We classify biharmonic submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with parallel normalized mean curvature vector fields and with at most two distinct principal curvatures. In particular, we determine all biharmonic surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector fields in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ .

In the context of two illustrative examples from supersymmetric quantum mechanics we show that the semiclassical analysis of the path integral requires complexification of the configuration space and action, and the inclusion of complex saddle points, even when the parameters in the action are real. We find new exact complex saddles, and show that without their contribution the semi-classical expansion is in conflict with basic properties such as positive-semidefiniteness of the spectrum, and constraints of supersymmetry. Generic saddles are not only complex, but also possibly multi-valued, and even singular. This is in contrast to instanton solutions, which are real, smooth, and single-valued. The multi-valuedness of the action can be interpreted as a hidden topological angle, quantized in units of π in supersymmetric theories. The general ideas also apply to non-supersymmetric theories.

The purpose of this paper is to provide global existence and uniqueness results for a family of fluid transport equations by establishing convergence results for the particle method applied to these equations. The considered family of PDEs is a collection of strongly nonlinear equations which yield traveling wave solutions and can be used to model a variety of flows in fluid dynamics. We apply a particle method to the studied evolutionary equations and provide a new self-contained method for proving its convergence. The latter is accomplished by using the concept of space-time bounded variation and the associated compactness properties. From this result, we prove the existence of a unique global weak solution in some special cases and obtain stronger regularity properties of the solution than previously established.

A finite element method for computing viscous incompressible flows based on the gauge formulation introduced in [Weinan E, Liu J-G. Gauge method for viscous incompressible flows. Journal of Computational Physics (submitted)] is presented. This formulation replaces the pressure by a gauge variable. This new gauge variable is a numerical tool and differs from the standard gauge variable that arises from decomposing a compressible velocity field. It has the advantage that an additional boundary condition can be assigned to the gauge variable, thus eliminating the issue of a pressure boundary condition associated with the original primitive variable formulation. The computational task is then reduced to solving standard heat and Poisson equations, which are approximated by straightforward, piecewise linear (or higher-order) finite elements. This method can achieve high-order accuracy at a cost comparable with that of solving standard heat and Poisson equations. It is naturally adapted to complex geometry and it is much simpler than traditional finite element methods for incompressible flows. In this paper, we introduce a new adaptive data analysis method to study trend and instantaneous frequency of nonlinear and nonstationary data. This method is inspired by the Empirical Mode Decomposition method (EMD) and the recently developed compressed (compressive) sensing theory. The main idea is to look for the sparsest representation of multiscale data within the largest possible dictionary consisting of intrinsic mode functions of the form {a(t) cos(θ(t))}, where a ∈ V (θ), V (θ) consists of the functions smoother than cos(θ(t)) and θ   0. This problem can be formulated as a nonlinear l0 optimization problem. In order to solve this optimization problem, we propose a nonlinear matching pursuit method by generalizing the classical matching pursuit for the l0 optimization problem. One important advantage of this nonlinear matching pursuit method is it can be implemented very efficiently and is very stable to noise. Further, we provide an error analysis of our nonlinear matching pursuit method under certain scale separation assumptions. Extensive numerical examples will be given to demonstrate the robustness of our method and comparison will be made with the state-of-the-art methods. We also apply our method to study data without scale separation, and data with incomplete or under-sampled data.

This paper mainly focuses on the CR analogue of the three-circle theorem in a complete noncompact pseudohermitian manifold of vanishing torsion being odd dimensional counterpart of Kaehler geometry. In this paper, we show that the CR three-circle theorem holds if its pseudohermitian sectional curvature is nonnegative. As an application, we confirm the first CR Yau uniformization conjecture and obtain the CR analogue of the sharp dimension estimate for CR holomorphic functions of polynomial growth and its rigidity when the pseudohermitian sectional curvature is nonnegative. This is also the first step toward second and third CR Yauís uniformization conjecture. Moreover, in the course of the proof of the CR three-circle theorem, we derive CR sub-Laplacian comparison theorem. Then Liouville theorem holds for positive pseudoharmonic functions in a complete noncompact pseudohermitian (2n + 1)-manifold of vanishing torsion and nonnegative pseudohermitian Ricci curvature.

In this article, we propose the notion of the general $p$-affine capacity and prove some basic properties for the general $p$-affine capacity, such as affine invariance and monotonicity. The newly proposed general $p$-affine capacity is compared with several classical geometric quantities, e.g., the volume, the $p$-variational capacity and the $p$-integral affine surface area. Consequently, several sharp geometric inequalities for the general $p$-affine capacity are obtained. These inequalities extend and strengthen many well-known (affine) isoperimetric and (affine) isocapacitary inequalities.
