We prove several vanishing theorems for a class of generalized elliptic genera on foliated manifolds, by using classical equivariant index theory. The main techniques are the use of the Jacobi theta-functions and the construction of a new class of elliptic operators associated to foliations.

In this paper, we generalize the Cao-Yau'’s gradient estimate for the sum of squares of vector …elds up to higher step under ssumption of the generalized curvature-dimension inequality. With its applications, by deriving a curvature-dimension inequality, we are able to obtain the Li-Yau gradient estimate for the CR heat equation in a closed pseudohermitian manifold of nonvanishing torsion tensors. As consequences, we obtain the Harnack inequality and upper bound estimate for the CR heat kernel. 1.

In this article we show that for every finite area hyperbolic surface X of type (g,n) and any harmonic Beltrami differential μ on X , then the magnitude of μ at any point of small injectivity radius is uniform bounded from above by the ratio of the Weil–Petersson norm of μ over the square root of the systole of X up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. We apply the uniform bound above to show that the Weil–Petersson Ricci curvature, restricted at any hyperbolic surface of short systole in the moduli space, is uniformly bounded from below by the negative reciprocal of the systole up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. As an application, we show that the average total Weil–Petersson scalar curvature over the moduli space is uniformly comparable to -g as the genus g goes to infinity.

We study the rigidity of polyhedral surfaces using variational principles. The action functionals are derived from the cosine laws. The main focus of this paper is on the cosine law for a nontriangular region bounded by three possibly disjoint geodesics. Several of these cosine laws were first discovered and used by Fenchel and Nielsen. By studying the derivative of the cosine laws, we discover a uniform approach to several variational principles on polyhedral surfaces with or without boundary. As a consequence, the work of Penner, Bobenko and Springborn and Thurston on rigidity of polyhedral surfaces and circle patterns are extended to a very general context.

In this paper, we continue our study of the canonical metrics on the moduli space of curves. We first prove the bounded geometry of the Ricci and perturbed Ricci metrics. By carefully choosing the pertubation constant and by studying the asymptotics, we show that the Ricci and holomorphic sectional curvatures of the perturbed Ricci metric are bounded from above and below by negative constants. Based on our understanding of the KhlerEinstein metric, we show that the logarithmic cotangent bundle over the DeligneMumford moduli space is stable with respect to the canonical polarization. Finally, in the last section, we prove the strongly bounded geometry of the KhlerEinstein metric by using the KhlerRicci flow and a priori estimates of the complex Monge-Ampere equation.

Suppose M is a m-dimensional submanifold without umbilic points in the (m+ p)-dimensional unit sphere S m+ p. Four basic invariants of M m under the Mbius transformation group of S m+ p are a symmetric positive definite 2-form g called the Mbius metric, a section B of the normal bundle called the Mbius second fundamental form, a 1-form called the Mbius form, and a symmetric (0, 2) tensor A called the Blaschke tensor. In the Mbius geometry of submanifolds, the most important examples of Mbius minimal submanifolds (also called Willmore submanifolds) are Willmore tori and Veronese submanifolds. In this paper, several fundamental inequalities of the Mbius geometry of submanifolds are established and the Mbius characterizations of Willmore tori and Veronese submanifolds are presented by using Mbius invariants.

We derive a gradient estimate for positive functions, in particular for positive solutions to the heat equation, on finite or locally finite graphs. Unlike the well known Li-Yau estimate, which is based on the maximum principle, our estimate follows from the graph structure of the gradient form and the Laplacian operator. Though our assumption on graphs is slightly stronger than that of Bauer et al. (J Differ Geom 99:359–405, 2015), our estimate can be easily applied to nonlinear differential equations, as well as differential inequalities. As applications, we estimate the greatest lower bound of Cheng’s eigenvalue and an upper bound of the minimal heat kernel, which is recently studied by Bauer et al. (Preprint, 2015) by the Li-Yau estimate. Moreover, generalizing an earlier result of Lin and Yau (Math Res Lett 17:343–356, 2010), we derive a lower bound of nonzero eigenvalues by our gradient estimate.

In this paper, we show that any compact Kähler manifold homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature admits a Kähler–Einstein metric of general type. Moreover, we prove that, on a compact symplectic manifold X homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature, for any almost complex structure J compatible with the symplectic form, there is no non-constant J-holomorphic entire curve f:C→X.

We obtain a residue formula for an obstruction to the existence of coupled Kähler–Einstein metrics described by Futaki–Zhang. We apply it to an example studied separately by Futaki and Hultgren which is a toric Fano manifold with reductive automorphism, does not admit a Kähler–Einstein metric but still admits coupled Kähler–Einstein metrics.

Following the work of Hamilton, Ilmanen and the first author [4], in this paper we study the linear stability of Perelman's ν-entropy on Einstein manifolds with positive Ricci curvature. We observe the equivalence between the linear stability (also called ν-stability in this paper) restricted to the transversal traceless symmetric 2-tensors and the stability of Einstein manifolds with respect to the Hilbert action. As a main application, we give a full classification of linear stability of the ν-entropy on symmetric spaces of compact type. In particular, we exhibit many more ν-stable and ν-unstable examples than previously known and also the first ν-stable examples, other than the standard spheres, whose second variations are negative definite.

We show that every complete nontrivial gradient Yamabe soliton admits a special global warped product structure with a one-dimensional base. Based on this, we obtain a general classification theorem for complete nontrivial locally conformally flat gradient Yamabe solitons.

We characterize conformally flat spaces as the only compact self-dual manifolds which are U(1)-equivariantly and conformally decomposable into two complete self-dual Einstein manifolds with common conformal infinity. A geometric characterization of such conformally flat spaces is also given.

The chapter discusses the equivariant loop theorem for three-dimensional manifolds that is needed in settling the Smith conjecture and reviews the existence theorems for minimal surfaces. The equivariant version of the loop theorem says that there are a finite number of properly embedded disks in <i>M</i> that satisfy the required properties. The loop theorem respects the action of the group <i>G</i> in a suitable manner. The chapter puts a metric on <i>M</i> so that the group <i>G</i> acts isometrically and so that <i>M</i> is convex with respect to the outward normal. Then with respect to this metric, the existence of an immersed disk <i>D</i>₁ is demonstrated, in <i>M</i> whose boundary <i> D₁</i>, represents a nontrivial element in ₁(<i>S</i>) and whose area is minimal among all such disks. One of the main purposes of this paper is to understand the geometry of the moduli and the Teichmller spaces of Riemann surfaces. The most interesting results we have in this paper are the detailed understanding of two new complete Khler metrics with nice properties and the KhlerEinstein metric on the Teichmller and the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. The two new metrics, the Ricci metric and the perturbed Ricci metric, are naturally defined as the negative Ricci curvature of the WeilPetersson metric and a combination of it with the WeilPetersson metric. We prove that these new metrics and the KhlerEinstein metric on the Teichmller and moduli spaces all have Poincar type boundary behavior, and further, in [7], we prove that they all have bounded geometry. Note that the KhlerEinstein metric is the key link between the differential geometric and algebraic geometric aspects of these spaces

A geometric classification of the compact four-dimensional Einstein-Weyl manifolds with at least four-dimensional symmetry group is given. Our results also sharpen previous results on four-dimensional Einstein metrics and correct Parker's topological classification of cohomogeneity-one four-manifolds.

Let M be a complete two-dimensional surface immersed into the three-dimensional Euclidean space. Then a classical theorem of Hilbert says that when the curvature of M is a non-zero constant, M must be the sphere. On the other hand, when the curvature of M is zero, a theorem of Hartman-Nirenberg [4] says that M must be a plane or a cylinder. These two theorems complete the classification of complete surfaces with constant curvature in R 3.

this article we generalize the classical gradient estimate for the minimal surface equation to higher codimension. We consider a vector-valued function $u : \Omega \subset \math{R}^n \to \math{R}^m$ that satisfies the minimal surface system, see equation (1.1) in §1. The graph of u is then a minimal submanifold of $\math{R}^{n+m}$. We prove an a priori gradient bound under the assumption that the Jacobian of $ du: \math{R}^n \to \math{R}^m$ on any two dimensional subspace of $\mtah{R}^n$ is less than or equal to one. This assumption is automatically satisfied when $du$ is of rank one and thus the estimate covers the case when m=1, i.e., the original minimal surface equation. This is applied to Bernstein type theorems for minimal submanifolds of higher codimension.

Making use of the relations among 3-Sasakian manifolds, hypercomplex manifolds and quaternionic Khler orbifolds, we prove that complete 3-Sasakian manifolds are rigid.

Let M be a compact Criemannian manifold of nonpositive curvature1 and with fundamental group . It is well known [8, p. 102] that M is a K (, 1) and thus completely determined up to homotopy type by . In light of this fact it is natural to ask to what extent the riemannian structure of M is determined by the structure of , and the intent of this paper is to demonstrate that rather strong implications of this sort exist. In the case that M has strictly negative curvature, the group is known to be highly noncommutative. Every abelian, in fact, every solvable, subgroup of is cyclic [3]. It is therefore a plausible conjecture that in the nonpositive curvature case, will possess large amounts of commutativity only under special geometric circumstances. We shall show that this is true, that indeed those properties of which involve commutativity have a dramatic reflection in the riemannian structure of M.

THE MAIN PURPOSE of this paper is to give a simple and unified new proof of the Witten rigidity theorems, which were conjectured by Witten and first proved by Taubes [25], Bott-Taubes [S], Hirzebruch Cl23 and Krichever [15]. Our proof shows that the modular invariance, which is the intrinsic symmetry of elliptic genera, actually implies their rigidity. Some new properties of elliptic genera and their relationships with theta-functions are also discussed. We remark that our proof makes essential uses of the new feature of loop groups and loop spaces, the modular invariance. We note that, with the help of the modular group, we can catch the topological information on loop space by simply working on finite-dimensional manifold. By developing this idea further, in [21] we have proved the rigidity of the Dirac operator on loop space twisted by higher-level loop group representations, while the Witten ridigity theorems are the special cases of level 1. Many topological vanishing theorems are also derived in [21] by refining the argument in this paper, especially an &amp;-vanishing theorem for loop space. In [19] modular invariance is used again to establish a general miraculous cancellation formula, relating the Hirzebruch L-form to certain twisted &amp;-forms, which has many interesting topological results as consequences. These results were announced in [20].

We briefly survey our recent results about the Mumford goodness of several canonical metrics on the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, including the Weil-Petersson metric, the Ricci metric, the Perturbed Ricci metric and the Kahler-Einstein metric. We prove the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric. As applications of these results we deduce certain important results about the <i>L</i> ²-cohomology groups of the logarithmic tangent bundle over the compactified moduli spaces.

Guy Bonneau has kindly pointed out two errors in [1]. The first is that the manifolds M (k) and M (k)/Z2 do not admit U (2)-invariant Einstein-Weyl structures for k 2; thus the last four entries in Table 4 (page 422) do not occur. The error is on pages 429430. The analysis there is correct, except that the critical line to consider in Lemma 7.5 and the subsequent calculation is = , instead of = 2/k, because of the constraint (D, ](equivalently, &gt; ) occurring in the definition of . All orientable metric surfaces are Riemann surfaces and admit global conformal parameterizations. Riemann surface structure is a fundamental structure and governs many natural physical phenomena, such as heat diffusion and electro-magnetic fields on the surface. A good parameterization is crucial for simulation and visualization. This paper provides an explicit method for finding optimal global conformal parameterizations of arbitrary surfaces. It relies on certain holomorphic differential forms and conformal mappings from differential geometry and Riemann surface theories. Algorithms are developed to modify topology, locate zero points, and determine cohomology types of differential forms. The implementation is based on a finite dimensional optimization method. The optimal parameterization is intrinsic to the geometry, preserves angular structure, and can play an important role in various applications

In this paper, we solve a problem of Kobayashi posed in (Complex Finsler vector bundles, American Mathematical Society, Providence, 1996) by introducing a Donaldson type functional on the space F + ( E ) of strongly pseudo-convex complex Finsler metrics on <i>E</i>a holomorphic vector bundle over a closed Khler manifold <i>M</i>. This Donaldson type functional is a generalization in the complex Finsler geometry setting of the original Donaldson functional and has FinslerEinstein metrics on <i>E</i> as its only critical points, at which this functional attains the absolute minimum.
