We prove a finiteness property of the values of the skein polynomial of homogeneous knots that allows us to establish large classes of such knots to have arbitrarily unsharp Bennequin inequality (for the Thurston-Bennequin invariant of any of their Legendrian embeddings in the standard contact structure of R3). We also give a short proof that there are only finitely many such knots that have given genus and given braid index.

Given a smooth polarized Riemann surface (X, L) endowed with a hyperbolic metric \omega with cusp singularities along a divisor D, we show the L^ 2 projective embedding of (X, D) defined by L^ k is asymptotically almost balanced in a weighted sense. The proof depends on sufficiently precise understanding of the behavior of the Bergman kernel in three regions, with the most crucial one being the neck region around D. This is the first step towards understanding the algebro-geometric stability of extremal Khler metrics with singularities.

The main purpose of the present paper is to investigate the nonlinear stability of viscous shock waves and rarefaction waves for the bipolar VlasovPoissonBoltzmann (VPB) system. To this end, motivated by the micromacro decomposition to the Boltzmann equation in Liu and Yu (Commun Math Phys 246:133179, 2004) and Liu etal. (Physica D 188:178192, 2004), we first set up a new micromacro decomposition around the local Maxwellian related to the bipolar VPB system and give a unified framework to study the nonlinear stability of the basic wave patterns to the system. Then, as applications of this new decomposition, the time-asymptotic stability of the two typical nonlinear wave patterns, viscous shock waves and rarefaction waves are proved for the 1D bipolar VPB system. There is much research on the dynamical complexity on irregular sets andlevel sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, theHausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (andtopological pressure), etc. However, this is not the case from the viewpoint of chaos.There are many results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and variouschaos. However, positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos,called DC1. Therefore, it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. Inthis paper, we will show that, for dynamical systems with specification properties, thereexist uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in irregular sets and level sets. Meanwhile, weprove that several recurrent level sets of points with different recurrent frequency haveuncountable DC1-scrambled subsets. The major argument in proving the above results isthat there exists uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in saturated sets.

We show that for every simple closed curve , the extremal length and the hyperbolic length of  are quasi-convex functions along any Teichm¨uller geodesic. As a corollary, we conclude that, in Teichm¨uller space equipped with the Teichm¨uller metric, balls are quasi-convex.

Personal videos often contain visual distractors, which are objects that are accidentally captured that can distract viewers from focusing on the main subjects. We propose a method to automatically detect and localize these distractors through learning from a manually labeled dataset. To achieve spatially and temporally coherent detection, we propose extracting features at the Temporal-Superpixel (TSP) level using a traditional SVM-based learning framework. We also experiment with end-to-end learning using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which achieves slightly higher performance than other methods. The classification result is further refined in a post-processing step based on graph-cut optimization. Experimental results show that our method achieves an accuracy of 81% and a recall of 86%. We demonstrate several ways of removing the detected distractors to improve the video quality, including video hole filling; video frame replacement; and camera path re-planning. The user study results show that our method can significantly improve the aesthetic quality of videos.

In this paper we investigate staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Helmholtz equation with large wave number on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The method is highly flexible by allowing rough grids such as the trapezoidal grids and highly distorted grids, and at the same time, is numerical flux free. Furthermore, it allows hanging nodes, which can be simply treated as additional vertices. By exploiting a modified duality argument, the stability and convergence can be proved under the condition that \kappa h is sufficiently small, where \kappa h is the wave number and \kappa h is the mesh size. Error estimates for both the scalar and vector variables in \kappa h norm are established. Several numerical experiments are tested to verify our theoretical results and to present the capability of our method for capturing singular solutions.

Different from conventional spaceborne or airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with optimal aperture length, an imaging radar with highly suboptimal aperture length acquires the data in short bursts by a geometry spreading over a large range. A polarlike or pseudopolar format grid is introduced to sample data close to the resolution, which presents the design of a separable kernel for efficient FFT implementation. In this paper we introduce our preliminary research results for segmentation and labeling of 3-dimensional microscopy neuron image. We segment each of stacked 2-dimensional image slices using a partial differential equation (PDE) based algorithm and project previous slice segmentation result to the next slide as an initialization condition. Then we label neurons using an efficient connected component labeling algorithm. We show sample results obtained from real neuron image data

Let (Mn, g) be a complete non-compact K¨ahler manifold with non-negative and bounded holomorphic bisectional curvature. We prove that M is holomorphically covered by a pseudoconvex domain in Cn which is homeomorphic to R2n, provided (Mn, g) has uniform linear average quadratic curvature decay.

In \cite{rigidity}, Luo introduced a $\psi_{\lambda}$ edge invariant which turns out to be a coordinate of the Teichm\"uller space of a surface with boundary. And he proved that for $\lambda \geq 0$, the image of the Teichm\"uller space under $\psi_{\lambda}$ edge invariant coordinate is an open cell. In this paper we verify his conjecture that for $\lambda<0$, the image of the Teichm\"uller space is a bounded convex polytope.
